Union Square is a collaborative album focusing on music by three of the most original voices in contemporary jazz.
For this, their first recording as a trio, Michael Blake, Ben Allison and Rudy Royston offer an album that's powerful and thoughtful, a personal statement that reflects who they are as musicians and their place in time and modern culture.
Full of grand dynamics and interplay and those moments of magic that can't be planned for, Michael, Ben and Rudy allow the conversation to unfold in a natural way.
The name of the album, Union Square, is taken from a public square of the same name in Greenwich Village, New York City where artists, activists, and street performers congregate. Union Square is ground zero for many contemporary political movements and causes such as Occupy Wall Street, the fight for gay rights & marriage equality and other social movements.
The album was recorded and mixed without the over-use of artificial studio reverb, enhancing the intimacy of the music, letting the strength of the compositions and the subtlety of the conversation between these master musicians shine through.
