Here we find four internationally renowned jazz artists, each with an exceptional curriculum, collaborating to form a new quartet based on mutual passion for visceral, creative and unpredictable sounds. They eschew the traditional roles of sideman and leader in favor of equal contributions by each member of the group. They interact with fluid interplay and an exchange of rhythmic and harmonic ideas that flow from one to another through an endless stream of motivic development. Sensitive listening and a common musical language enable them to embrace the inherent power of jazz in their own unique way.
"Portraits" is based on the search for unusual compositions by historically significant jazz composers. In this first chapter, Inside Jazz Quartet presents new interpretations of works by Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Yusef Lateef, Steve Swallow and Carla Bley.
Writing songs is a little like making babies; you hope they'll have a good life once they're on their own, out in the real world. It's very gratifying to find my tunes treated with such care and respect by the Inside Jazz Quartet. They've clearly paid careful attention to what I wrote, but they've also brought to this music fresh insight, and a perspective I couldn't have imagined myself. Who could ask for more?
Best Wishes, Steve Swallow
